Many people think of music theory as a set of rules to be followed or broken. Something that dictates behavior and a common sense of right or wrong. But, in actuality, music theory is a language to communicate the qualities of sound. It just describes what something is or explains in detail what is happening in a piece or style of music. And whether you are composing or just playing cover tunes for fun, if you are going to play and create with other musicians, it really helps to have a common language to communicate ideas and develop a shared understanding of what you are doing together.

As with any specialized language there are terms and definitions not understood by most people that lend themselves to puns and other plays on words, which we’ve started collecting here. But, we need more than I have found so far. So let us know your favorite music theory humor.
